BERKELEY
2100 M. L. King (at Addison) in Berkeley. (510) 848-3378. This is the most comprehensive organization in the East Bay providing many different services to the homeless. Some of their services include homeless employment assistance, substance abuse treatment, advocacy, counseling, and adult education. Mail and message service. Telephone use is permitted.
Emergency Support Services (BOSS) 711 Harrison St. (at 4th.) in Berkeley. Check in at the office on 2100 MLK Jr. Way. The MLK office hours are MWF 9-4pm and TTh 9-2pm. First come, first served. The shelter’s hours are 5pm-8am for single women and children. The shelter is open 24 hours for families. There is a separate wing for women and children. No minors are allowed unless they are accompanied by a guardian. The facilities can accommodate 90 people. Free breakfast and dinner. Showers are available from 7pm-10pm Monday through Friday and cost 50 cents. You need to bring your own towel and soap. Wheelchair accessible.
2218 Acton St. (at Bancroft Way) Hours are Monday through Saturday 9-4pm. This is a safe daytime shelter for homeless women and children that provides food, personal hygiene items, information workshops, and other services. Dorothy Day House Serves breakfast at People’s Park seven days a week. The men’s shelter is located at 1931 Center Street, between Milvia and Martin Luther King where there is hot dinner. Shelter during rainy weather. Youth Emergency Assistance Hostel (YEAH!) 1744 University Ave (between Grant and McGee). (510) 848-1424. Provides seasonal shelter to youths between the ages of 18-25. Open for 20 weeks during winter. Meals, showers, mats with fresh sheets, clean socks and underwear. Separate quarters for women with children. Pets are welcome. Food Not Bombs, East Bay (FNB) 3124 Shattuck Ave. (510)644-4187 or (510)540-0751. 2539 Telegraph Avenue at Blake Street in Berkeley. (510)841-4776. Services for the deaf, blind, and disabled. Independent living skills and job counseling. Financial counseling. There is also assistance for people with mental and/or emotional illnesses. Asian and Latino support services. The CoHousing Company 1250 Addison Stret #113 at Bonar, in Berkeley. (510)549-9980. This is a resource center for individuals or groups who are interested in creating cohousing communities. Ecumenical Chaplaincy to the Homeless, Berkeley (BECH) 2345 Channing Way between Dana and Ellsworth, in Berkeley. (510) 548-0551. This program accommodates work cooperatives, street counseling, community organizing, a clothing ministry, spiritual services and a newspaper written by homeless persons. It is run by homeless and nonhomeless volunteers. Homeless Action Center 2101-A Woolsey Street at Shattuck, in Berkeley. (510)540-0878. This volunteer-based program provides free legal services to people in Alameda County who have mental illnesses and also to poverty- stricken residents. The center focuses on benefits advocacy, primarily in the area of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Berkeley Free Clinic 2339 Durant Avenue between Dana and Ellsworth, in Berkeley. (800) 6-CLINIC. The BFC is open for general medical services in the evenings Monday through Friday. TB services are only offered on Tuesday evenings, while general medical services will be provided on all other weeknights. Please call at 5:45 PM to arrange a same- evening appointment. The clinic is prepared to treat basic men's STDs, colds and sore throats, simple rashes, and skin concerns. Also tests for TB, pregnancy testing. Limited treatment for ear problems, lower respiratory concerns and urinary tract infections in women. Note: None of the lay health workers can see long-term problems, like diabetes or HIV, or problems that are life threatening or may be life threatening.
